“BUSOG (British Undergraduate Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) was founded in 2012 with a simple aim — to bridge the gap between undergraduate medical education and the world of obstetrics and gynaecology. As a medical student passionate about the specialty, I (alongside my colleague and co-founder, Dr Hassan Naveed) recognised that aspiring students lacked accessible resources, support, and structured guidance in pursuing this career path.
Following a series of discussions with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), we established BUSOG as the undergraduate branch of the RCOG — creating a national platform to inspire, inform, and connect future clinicians interested in women’s health.
During my two terms as President, BUSOG appointed regional ambassadors, curated educational events, and launched what is now the annual BUSOG Day — a flagship event that continues to grow in scope and impact.
Although I ultimately pursued a career in General Practice, obstetrics and gynaecology remains close to my heart, particularly in the maternity and perinatal care space. I am proud to see how far BUSOG has come and excited for what lies ahead for the organisation.”
Dr Lamis Latif
Founder and Former President, BUSOG

Piloted in 2012, the BUSOG has expanded exponentially under 5 terms of committees. With a new committee elected for a two-year term in October 2024, we hope to continue to extend the scope of the society to provide networking opportunities, events and academic experiences for our members. We hope to continue strengthening our relationship with the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RCOG) as well as other national and international societies. The BUSOG is targeted towards medical students and pre-specialty doctors across the whole of the UK to give clear, honest and helpful advice to those that are passionate about pursuing a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
We aim to do this by supporting pre-trainees with exam preparation, careers advice and networking opportunities, as well as promoting awareness of current issues with the specialty and working with the RCOG and beyond to address these. We aim to run both local and national events across the next two years to increase our interaction with our members, covering a range of specialist topics and hosting guest speakers. We are also continuing to run our renowned Undergraduate Ambassador, Pre-Specialty Ambassador and Mentorship schemes to continue promoting inter-specialty communication and encouraging engagement with the specialty. The BUSOG will always be a society run by members for its members, and our work will continue to be inspired by students, pre-specialty doctors and specialists to provide the best resources that we can. Make sure to subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on all of our work over the next two years.
